What drives innovation in today’s multi-billion dollar anti-aging beauty market? Ingredients. Look at any anti-aging beauty product and you’ll find at least one ingredient highlighted—alpha lipoic acid, goji berry, green tea, vitamin C, and retinol, to name a few. The market though is crowded. There’s no room for ingredients that don’t deliver results and don’t have valid science backing them.

Enter topical probiotics. This wildly successful ingestible ingredient has yet to explode onto the beauty scene. In this report you’ll discover why and learn about a new breakthrough in probiotic technology from Ganeden Biotech that is changing the face of anti-aging topicals.

The state of the anti-aging beauty market

Before delving into topical probiotic ingredients, let’s take a look at the current state of the robust anti-aging beauty market. Fortunately, the personal care market weathered the peak of our country’s economic woes in 2009 and continues to grow. It appears that consumers like the perceived affordable luxury and self-reward aspect of anti-aging beauty products.

Demographics must also be considered when looking at the success and growth of this market. The target demographic for cosmeceutical is evolving at a fast clip due to baby boomers and the $1 trillion buying power of the Hispanic market.

Mintel predicts that the anti-aging beauty market will continue to pick up speed until 2016 based on population growth of women aged 55+, who are the primary purchasers of anti-aging products. The Boomer market cannot be underestimated. 10 thousand people will turn 65 or older every day in the United States and these are the wealthiest seniors our country has ever seen. They want to stay active, be healthy and look young — and are willing to pay for it.

Growth will also come from the increasing Hispanic population. Hispanic respondents to Mintel’s consumer survey report steadily rising use us of anti-aging products, and thanks to their quickly growing population, Hispanics will play a larger role in the market in the near future.

The anti-aging beauty market gets more crowded every day. Unfortunately it’s too often with products lacking in science and efficacy, ultimately eroding consumer trust. Manufacturers must take it upon themselves to vet their featured ingredients to ensure their validity to keep this profitable market growing.

Probiotic technology in topical skin care

Ten years ago the term probiotic meant nothing to the average consumer. Today, 86% not only know what it means, but many associate it with good health. As awareness of these good bacteria grows, so do sales. Last year, consumers spent over $20 billion on probiotic supplements and foods and beverages enriched with the friendly bacteria. As probiotics hop aisles at the grocery store, from the dairy case to the supplement section to center aisle, personal care is poised for the next infiltration.

Topical probiotics entered the beauty market several years ago via new companies and heavy hitters like Clinique, which debuted its Clinique Medical line in 2008 (it has since been discontinued). The thorn in the side of these “probiotic” products has been lack of research. “Over the years we have watched companies launch so-called probiotic topical products without data supporting safety or efficacy,” says Sean Farmer, Ganeden Biotech’s founder and Chief Science Officer.

“If you are going to introduce a new product you really have to demonstrate benefits and claims through some sort of clinical studies, and many gloss over those details,” says Molly Fiedler, chemist and product formulator.

Ganeden Biotech has done just that with its breakthrough topical probiotic-derived ingredient, Bonicel.

Bonicel: 1 ingredient, 7 benefits

Bonicel is produced naturally during the fermentation process of GanedenBC30, Ganeden Biotech’s patented probiotic strain used in more than 80 foods and beverages throughout the world. To obtain Bonicel, Ganeden utilizes proprietary processes to optimize the metabolic activity of the fermenting organism, producing maximum amounts of naturally derived L+ Lactic acid, bacteriocins, enzymes and other metabolites.

“We are still learning how probiotics can benefit the skin. We do know that many microorganisms that naturally reside on the skin are friendly and beneficial and combat the inflammation that causes premature aging and wrinkling, just as they benefit inflammation in the gut,” Fiedler says.

A science-backed company, Ganeden launched Bonicel with good clinical data in hand including two double blind, placebo-controlled studies that found dramatic results in reducing signs of aging in female subjects ages 35 to 60. In one study of subjects at 4 weeks, Bonicel increased skin hydration by 16%, skin elasticity by 11%, and decreased fine lines and wrinkles in 50% of respondents.

In addition to results measured clinically by Cutometer and silicone replica, subjects’ self-reports found that 75% reported, “The dark circles under my eyes are less visible” and 75% of the treatment group reported, “The skin around my eyes feels more moisturized.”

“We are seeing a lot of introductions in “probiotic” topical skin care products, but few, if any, have research demonstrating they work at time of application. We’re excited that we have science showing that Bonicel does,” Farmer said.

Bonicel can be used in lotions, creams, gels, powders, scrubs, masks and cleansers. Unlike most probiotic ingredients included in topical formulations, Bonicel is easy to include in formulations and is naturally derived from the well-documented probiotic strain called GanedenBC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086).
