Premium skin care brand Karin Herzog was created almost 40 years ago by Swiss scientist Paul Herzog. After dedicating his career to investigating how oxygen benefits the human body, Herzog set out to stabilise oxygen in an emulsion format. Years later, he succeeded and the breakthrough was then used to create the Karin Herzog skin care brand – a brand dedicated to, and named after his wife.

When did your father realise that his discovery could have applications in beauty?

Originally, he set out to stabilise a hydrogen peroxide molecule. He succeeded after a few years but was always more interested in medical science than beauty. Despite this, my mother kept encouraging him and eventually began testing the creams he created on her own skin. She noticed the way it improved her skin health and felt that it would be a great product for the cosmetic field. Used in skin care, she found the products nourished and healed the skin without any negative side effects.

Have other brands replicated this discovery?

At the time my father made the breakthrough, which he patented, we were alone in claiming that oxygen benefits the skin. Since then, other brands have made the oxygen beauty market more popular but we're still the only ones that offer stabilised hydrogen peroxide in cream format, particularly in the concentrations that we have chosen.

Does oxygen have known skin benefits?

Yes, absolutely. With time, the level of oxygen in the skin tends to drop. This can be triggered by a range of lifestyle factors such as the environment, smoking or diet. Oxygen helps to normalise the skin to help it function better for both men and women, and across all skin types. Aside from this oxygen also works to increase hydration and mineral content in the skin as it contains water molecules.
