Dermokine offers alternative to traditionally produced growth factors

Following several months of promotional activity, Iceland’s ORF Genetics has officially launched a line of plant-based growth factors, providing an alternative to those traditionally produced in E.coli, yeast, or animal cells. Produced from the seeds of genetically modified barley, the Dermokine product line incorporates six human-like growth factors including epidermal growth factor (EGF), which is known to have a rejuvenating and healing effect on skin.

“Naturally we are extremely proud that ORF Genetics is the first company to be able to offer the cosmetics industry such proteins for the added efficacy and safety of high-quality formulations,” commented Björn Örvar, founder and ceo of ORF Genetics. “The use of human-like growth factors in cosmetics has, until now, been hindered by the fact that the only way to produce them previously was in E.coli, yeast or in animal calls, none of which are particularly attractive propositions for the industry or for consumers. Now we have managed to overcome this problem by developing a plant-based system for the production of safe, human-like growth factors in barley seeds.”

The barley used for the production of Dermokine growth factors is cultivated in volcanic pumice in ORF Genetics’ 2,000 square metre greenhouse using renewable geothermal energy.
