P&G joins collaborative for plant based PET

The collaborative aims to accelerate the development and use of 100% plant based PET

Procter & Gamble (P&G) has joined together with the Coca Cola Company, Ford Motor Company, HJ Heinz Company and Nike, Inc to form the Plant PET Technology Collaborative (PTC). The collaborative will build on the research and development efforts of the five companies to develop commercial solutions for PET plastic made entirely from plants and accelerate the use of 100% plant based PET materials and fibre in their products. The companies say their aim is to drive the development of common methodologies and standards for the use of plant based plastic, including life cycle analyses and universal terminology.

Last year P&G announced a major shift to plant derived packaging for some of its leading global cosmetic brands, using sugarcane derived plastic from Brazil’s Braskem.

Erin Simon, senior programme officer of packaging for World Wildlife Fund, said: “It’s encouraging to see these leading companies use their market influence to reduce dependence on petroleum based plastics. We hope other companies will follow their lead.”
