A beauty influencer has called out US retailer Target for “racism” after it locked up products for people with darker skin tones in secure boxes.

Eli Levi, who has more than 30,000 followers on TikTok, posted the hit-out video to the social media channel saying that it was racism “at its finest”.

“Target, please explain to me why the lighter shades are perfectly out, while the darker shades are packaged and security sealed,” Levi said in the video.

The video garnered almost 60,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments.

The video is believed to have been taken in New York, US, as Levi’s caption reads: “Not in NYC 2022”.

The products in question were Versed’s Luminizing Glow Drops, which is available in two shades: Sheer Bronzed and Sheer Golden.

Both products can be used on consumers with darker and lighter skin, as pictured on the brand’s website.

In a statement to Cosmetics Business Target said: “We want to create an inclusive and welcoming experience for everyone who shops at Target.

“This use of anti-theft packaging does not follow the guidelines we provide to our stores and we’re working quickly to correct the issue.”
