Michael Cammarata, the CEO of personal care brand Schmidt’s Naturals, supports the adoption of the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, SB 1249

The CEO of personal care brand Schmidt’s Naturals has written an open letter in support of the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, SB 1249.

The bill, spearheaded by Senator Cathleen Galigiana, prohibits the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in the US state.

Schmidt’s CEO Michael Cammarata’s letter comes just days before California’s primary elections, which are due to be held on 5 June.

In the letter, Cammarata writes: “We know that it is possible to invent, manufacture and bring to the market an entire range of products without any involvement in animal testing.

“The European Union ended importation and sale of any new cosmetics or ingredients that have been tested on animals in 2013.

“Other countries have enacted similar restrictions since then.

“It is time that California adopt a similar regulatory framework.”

Cammarata also references the fact that the Schmidt’s Naturals does not sell its products in any country that requires animal testing for cosmetics by law, such as China.

He clarified: “Our company is committed to manufacturing products without harming any animals and we do not purchase ingredients from suppliers that test their products on animals.”

In the letter, he also said that modern tests for product safety “that better predict human reactions are widely available” and that more than 30 countries now use such tests.

Wider support for the California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act

The bill has also garnered support from other cruelty-free support organisations and brands including Cruelty Free International.

When the bill was first introduced in February, Monica Engebretson of Cruelty Free International, said: “Our success in ending cosmetics testing on animals in the EU and now in a growing number of countries has proven that a cruelty free cosmetics market is possible.

“We applaud California for introducing this bill to ensure that cosmetics sold in the state are safe and humane.”
