Japanese beauty brand Shiseido has discovered a new ingredient which is believed to help eyelashes grow longer through promoting their growth rate. The ingredient, called Zizyphus jujuba fruit extract, is based on the brand's latest discoveries in the relationship between the growth rate and length of eyelashes.

It found that eyelashes have a more rapid life cycle of four months, but a slower growth rate of 0.18mm per day, compared with scalp hairs. The growing phase of eyelashes, which comes to around 40 days, was also found to take up one-third of the overall hair cycle.

After studying around 200 kinds of plant extracts believed to stimulate the proliferation of hair follicle cells, Shiseido found Zizyphus jujuba fruit extract to be effective.

The brand is expected to detail its research findings at the annual meeting of the Japanese Society of Anti-Ageing Medicine in Yokohama, Japan, in June.
