Beauty product labelling and decoration might not be the most obvious way for a brand to boost sustainability, but so great is the pressure to green-up that these considerations are being woven into labelling.

Scotland-based UWI Technology offers a smart labelling system that shows when a product is safe to use and when it is not, its Marketing Manager, Anna Cuthbert, tells Cosmetics Business.

This has been fuelled by the growing "food-for-skin trend, meaning products are packed with vitamins and probiotics, and this has led to shorter shelf lives to maintain ingredient freshness", she says. Therefore, beauty consumers need to know for how long a product is safe to use once it is opened.

UWI labels incorporate a 'use within' date – the expiry date of a product once opened, different from the expiry date when unopened.
