UK retailer reports sales increase in store and online thanks to competitive promotions

Superdrug has reported strong trading results over the five-week Christmas and New Year period, which ended on 2 January 2016 with sales in like-for-like stores increasing by 6.8 per cent. Online sales had a reported increase of 47 per cent over the five week Christmas period, compared to 2014.

Make-up was a winner as customers were offered market-leading promotions during December, including gifts with purchase from brands such as Maybelline, GOSH and Makeup Revolution. The mild weather also led to a 20% increase in bronzing product sales as partygoers swapped tights for bare legs.

Fragrance grew by 12 per cent, with all customers who spent £30 or more on fragrance receiving a free ‘Oscar’ teddy bear. Fragrance sales were driven by designer brands with best sellers including Daisy by Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney and Dolce & Gabbana.

Peter Macnab Superdrug Managing Director says: "This Christmas we concentrated on offering customers as many reasons as possible to shop at Superdrug – from market-leading prices to a wealth of free gifts. We also added interest to our stores with new beauty services, including Braid Bars offering hair plaiting and Glitter Lips.”

The last quarter saw four new stores open with the most recent being at Edinburgh Airport, this is the first airside pharmacy for Superdrug and 2016 will see 20 new stores open.
