Superdrug opens braiding bars

New retail concept arrives in five stores

Superdrug has introduced a new beauty service to five of its UK stores: hair braiding.

Consumers will be offered a menu of braided and plaited hairstyles in Superdrug stores, with the braiding bar being opened in the chain's Westfield White City store next month. The other stores that will offer braid services are located in Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and a second London store. All five stores are expected to launch the service before the end of the year.

The retailer is partnering with The Braid Bar for the new service. The Braid Bar already offers the service in London's Selfridges store, where it offers 12 different styles. It says people of all ages are welcomes to try out their braiding service and welcomes males to try out the service too.

Plaited and braided hair is a growing trend, with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Cara Delevigne leading the way. Older celebrities, including Helen Mirren and Uma Thurman have also been spotted with braided styles.

The braid bars will offer six styles: Claudia, Kate, Eva, Naomi, Gisele and Riri with prices starting at just £10. Each hairstyle takes around ten minutes to complete, making it ideal for busy consumers.

"Busy women know that when it comes to a hairstyle with staying power, there is nothing like a professionally created plait. While a blow dry can drop after a couple of days with a braid from The Braid Bar can last up to a week – it's a perfect hair style for the party season," said Sarah Gardner, Head of Beauty at Superdrug.

Consumers can drop in for appointments at the bar, with no need to book in advance.
