Superdrug reveals UK’s hair colour preferences

Statistics reveal that Scotland has the largest number of people with red hair

New stats from Superdrug suggest the colour of your hair doesn’t just show what type of person you are, it can also indicate which part of the country you live in.

The statistics reveal that Scotland is the most red-headed spot in the UK, with 40% of hair dye sales attributed to red hair dye. Meanwhile, blonde women in the north of England overtake the south by 32%, perhaps influenced by celebrities such as Coleen Rooney and Abbey Clancy. Blondes are also having lots of fun in Wales, as the retailer sells 50% more blonde hair dye there than anything else.

Elsewhere, London ladies play it safe with brunette shades being a bestseller among stores around the London area; 59% of women in Middlesex are dying their hair brown, with just 10% opting for blonde, suggesting the Kate Middleton effect is still affecting the London area very heavily.

Simon Comins, Buying Director at Superdrug, said: “These sales underline that the colour of your hair can signal where you live... Aside from this, it’s interesting to see such a clear pattern in certain regions of the UK. Whether it is down to women wanting to emulate the style of their local celebrity icons or simply down to taste, we can see a huge trend for particular colours. “We’ll be keeping a watch on these stats: if Cheryl Cole dyes her hair red, we expect to see sales rocket in Newcastle.”
