The stratum corneum (SC) is the barrier between us, as organisms, and the outside world. A bricks-and-mortar style layer comprising a ‘pile’ of 10-20 corneocytes and intercellular lipids, the SC provides regulates both water evaporation and the invasion of exogenous hazards.
