The retail industry employment in the US increased by 25,600 jobs during September, according to the National Retail Federation, despite a drop of 23,600 in August.
Jack Kleinhenz, National Retail Federation Chief Economist, believes this is due to the recent hurricane experienced across the US.
He said: “I think we can safely ignore the decline from August because that was largely a result of the aftermath of Hurricane Florence, which affected both the retail sector and leisure [and] hospitality.”
September’s numbers followed a revised monthly gain of 8,900 jobs in August over July, which was originally reported as 9,700 job loss.
Kleinhenz also noted that retail job numbers reported by the Labor Department do not provide an accurate representation of the industry due to the fact it only counts employees who work in stores and excludes retail workers in other parts of the business.
