Frost without the cost from Chroma

New frosting effect cuts time and cots

Until now PET with a frosted glass look could only be achieved by using spray painting. However Chroma Corporation now allows processors to create a frosted look at the machine using its colour concentrate, eliminating the added painting step.

“The moulded frosted plastic bottles are estimated to cost at least 90% less than those that are painted, are more durable because the colour is moulded into the plastic, and eliminate the added time and costs associated with the painting process,” comments Stuart Swain, Chroma’s director of sales and marketing.

The technique is said to work well in sheet extrusion and allows for frosted thermoformed containers. Different available use rates (between 1% and 5%) allow for the control of the frost effect’s intensity and provide bottles that range from translucent to opaque.
