Evonik establishes new naturals business segment

The Botanicals & Natural Actives segment falls under the German specialty chemicals giant’s life sciences division

Evonik is betting on botanicals and naturals with a newly-established business segment.

The creation of Evonik’s Botanicals & Natural Actives business follows several acquisitions by the German specialty chemicals firm in the biotechnology space.

These include the portfolio of Alkion Biopharma (acquired in 2016) and the 2021 purchases of Swiss sustainable botanicals pioneer Botanica and phytochemicals company Wilshire.

Most recently, last year, Evonik purchased Argentinian company Novachem, which expanded its portfolio of natural and sustainable active ingredients for skin and hair care applications.

The Botanicals & Natural Actives business also incorporates Evonik legacy materials, like its Tego Turmerone natural plant extract, Tego enlight natural brightening blend and Tego Natural Betaine natural amino acid derivative.

The new segment sits under Evonik’s life sciences division, called Nutrition & Care.

According to Evonik, the company will be better positioned to meet demand for botanical extracts and claim-substantiated natural actives thanks to its recently-established Skin Institute.

Made up of a global network of life science experts and laboratories to provide stronger support for claim-substantiated cosmetics, the Institute opened in March this year.
