The prestige brand will join L’Oréal’s professional products portfolio, giving the French beauty giant an ‘increased foothold in hair care’

L’Oréal has signed an agreement to acquire professional hair care brand Color Wow for an undisclosed sum.

The deal will “further strengthen” the French beauty giant’s professional products portfolio, as Color Wow has a “proven track record of success and strong potential for global growth,” read a statement from L’Oréal.

Color Wow was founded in 2013 by Gail Federici, offering a wide range of products that target specific hair care needs such as anti-frizz, thickening and volumising.

The prestige brand is experiencing rapid growth thanks to its engaged online community and professional origins, distributed via hair salons, selective distribution and e-commerce platforms.

Its hero products include XL Bombshell Volumizer and Dream Coat.

“We are delighted to welcome Color Wow to the L’Oréal family,” said Omar Hajeri, President of L’Oréal’s Professional Products Division.

“As a premium hair care brand, with high levels of proven efficacy at an accessible price point, this acquisition will give us an increased foothold in hair care and in the styling category.

“Convinced of its strong potential, our ambition is to make Color Wow a powerful brand worldwide.”

This news comes hot on the heels of L’Oréal snapping up a majority stake in premium skin care brand Medik8 to strengthen its Luxe Division.

Gail Federici, founder and CEO of Color Wow, said joining L’Oréal’s professional division is “an incredible opportunity” for the team.

She added: “Becoming part of the world’s number one beauty company will set the stage for Color Wow’s continued success and help drive our innovation to new heights.”

The deal is set to close following the customary closing conditions, including the standard regulatory approvals.

After what felt like an M&A slowdown at the start of the year, the beauty acquisition space is heating up.

Hailey Bieber’s Rhode has been acquired by e.l.f. Beauty for US$1bn, while Unilever has snapped up male grooming brand Dr. Squatch and personal care brand Wild.
