Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months in Islam.
It is a time for Muslims to fast, pray, reflect and engage in spiritual growth. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from eating or drinking during daylight hours.
The fast is seen as an act of worship, self-discipline and empathy for those who are less fortunate.
The specific dates of Ramadan vary each year since the Islamic calendar is based on the moon, but this year it is forecasted to start either on the evening of 28 February or the 1 March.
As fasting shifts daily routines, skin and hair can experience dehydration, sensitivity and dullness.
However, maintaining a consistent beauty routine during the month ensures that skin stays hydrated, nourished and radiant.
Dr Munir Somji, cosmetic surgeon and co-founder of DrMediSpa, highlights the importance of skin care during Ramadan.
He said: “Fasting allows the body to detoxify, which can have positive effects on the skin, but it may also lead to dehydration and increased sensitivity.
“A well-balanced skin care routine supports hydration, enhances cell regeneration, and prevents irritation caused by changes in diet and sleep patterns.”
“Changes in diet, sleep and hydration levels during Ramadan can sometimes lead to breakouts or increased skin sensitivity.
“By maintaining the correct skin care routine, you help balance oil production and prevent irritation caused by these changes.
“Additionally, hydrated and well-nourished skin appears brighter and healthier, complementing the overall sense of renewal that Ramadan brings.”
