Cross-border shopping dents Swiss cosmetics sales

Sales of cosmetics in Switzerland are suffering as locals shop internationally for bargains. However, Swiss brands are focused on overseas markets and the cosmetics industry is taking steps to ensure the integrity of ‘Swiss made’ is not compromised by imitators, writes Julia Wray

From its luxury timepieces to trusted financial institutions, Switzerland is frequently a byword for quality and reliability, and cosmetics are no exception.

Globally renowned brands of Swiss heritage like La Prairie and Weleda are celebrated, respectively, for their luxuriousness and sustainability, while for a country with a population of just over eight million, Switzerland packs quite a punch in fragrance, being home to industry giants Givaudan and Firmenich.
