Fake tan has something of a painstaking reputation. Up against an infantry of stained sheets, tangerine-tinted fingers, blotchy ankles and elbows that signify scrimping on the exfoliating, taking on the task of self-tanning needs a level of meticulous planning that would impress any army general.

But those that choose to embark on this military operation are not being rewarded for their efforts.
