Lip gloss products are used by individuals of all age groups, from teenagers to adults – and the humble product has come a long way since its inception by Max Factor in the 1930s.

With lip gloss sales across Europe growing by 51% during the year ending May 2023, the increased popularity of the segment can be broken down to several different drivers including new lip care offerings such as Rhode’s Peptide Lip Treatment, enhanced textures and various pack formats and materials.

How gloss upgraded

A shift in traditional packaging has started to gain traction for many reasons including the Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of social media and viral videos, aesthetically pleasing formats and minimalism.

Ruby Hammer, founder of Ruby Hammer Beauty, believes hygiene has played a part in changing consumer trends and keeping formulas intact.

“Since the Covid-19 pandemic, I’ve found people are still wary, especially when out and about, to dip their fingers into pots with hands that may feel unclean,” she comments.
