France has been a consistent driving force behind the beauty industry for centuries. But a new generation of rebellious entrepreneurs are disrupting the status quo

The beauty industry would likely not be the force it is today without France.

A bedrock for cosmetics and skin care innovations for centuries, the country has birthed some of the industry's most prolific titans including L'Oréal, LVMH and Coty.

These businesses consistently claim the top spot as the world's biggest beauty companies, and are a major reason behind France being the largest cosmetics exporter in the world.

The country's export value increased by 18.8% to US$19.2bn in 2022, according to French trade union FEBEA, sitting well above competitors such as South Korea and the US.

But while it can be easy for the likes of L'Oréal and LVMH to steal the spotlight when it comes to this accolade, France's independent beauty scene
