The European Cosmetics Association, Colipa has offered its opinions on the recent 7th World Congress (7WC) on Alternatives and Animal Use in the Life Sciences, at a debriefing event.

"The World Congress provided an opportunity to share our research into alternative methods and to benchmark it against cutting edge science, whilst taking inspiration from the best scientists in the world,” said Bertil Heerink, Colipa director general.

“It would have been unthinkable years ago that we would have had such a significant World Congress on Alternatives to animal testing,” added Dagar Roth-Behrendt, a member of the European Parliament and host of the debriefing event. “Over the years we have been able to build mutual trust in our relationship with the cosmetics industry, through working together with Colipa.”

Thomas Hartung, co-chair of the 7WC added: “The cosmetics industry is making an outstanding investment in the search for alternative methods.”

Colipa recently announced it has agreed to match the research funds made available by the European Commission for the development of new alternatives to repeated dose toxicity. The association will provide €25m with the aim of being able to predict the toxicity of substances used in repeated manner and exposing the whole organism over a long period of time.
