Garnier Skin Naturals is launching a new skin care range for the over 50s – Vital Restore – which contains extract of Orchis mascula, a species of orchid said to promote rehydration, to reinforce the skin’s structure and lessen the sign of age spots in more mature skin.
Garnier hopes that its Vital Restore range containing four products – a day cream, night cream, eye cream and anti-age spots serum – will help bring the power of the orchid to the mass market. Previously orchid extract has been available in Guerlain’s ultra premium Orchidée Impériale range.
Julie McManus, senior scientific adviser for L’Oréal, discussed the scientific benefits of being able to use orchid extract in a skin care range. “One of the main attributes of the orchid is its ability to store water and its longevity. Because of this it can continually renew and replenish itself and therefore doesn’t deteriorate with age.
“When a woman ages, particularly upon going through the menopause, the drop in oestrogen levels means the skin shows signs of ageing much more quickly and the dryness and loss of firmness means age spots are much more apparent.”
The orchid extract is garnered by a type of in-vitro process which ensures the sustainable harvesting of the Orchis Mascula, which is in fact an endangered species.
Products will be on sale europe-wide from the beginning of March and will have a RRP of between £9.99 and £11.99.
