German chemicals group Lanxess has denied reports that it is interested in acquiring rival German chemical speciality group Degussa despite a report in the Rheinische Post which said Lanxess had approached state government in Düsseldorf, where Degussa is based, for political support.

Lanxess has already said that it is focusing on strategic growth and looking for acquisitions after a period of restructuring. But a spokesperson from Degussa’s parent company RAG said: "It's an absurd idea that we will sell Degussa."
