Results are eagerly awaited from recent skin research undertaken as part of the recent Expedition 13 Astrolab mission on board the International Space Station (ISS). German European Space Agency Astronaut Thomas Reiter and his team conducted a wide range of scientific experiments on the ISS 400km above the Earth. Tests included lung function, cardiovascular measurement, stress level toleration, the collection of body liquids among other tests, including for the first time monitoring of the skin, the body's largest human organ.
Selected to conduct the skin research was equipment provided by leading skin analysis instrumentation supplier Courage + Khazaka. Three devices were selected: a Corneometer to check hydration levels of the skin's surface; a Tewameter to examine the quality of the skin's barrier function; and a Visioscan to assess the skin's surface structure.
