Sorghum is a cultivated as well as a wild North American plant rich in bioactive elements including flavonoids and polyphenols. A worldwide dietary staple with high nutritional value, sorghum extracts have historically been purported to have anti-inflammatory attributes. Sorghum bran is considered as a waste product of the sorghum grain industry and therefore, our use has a positive environmental impact. The flavonoids, condensed tannins, and polyphenols extracted from the bran portion of this ancient grain result in a product with multi-functional, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity providing multiple skin benefits.
The seeds of the sorghum plant are covered by a tough, multi-layered outer skin known as the bran. This outer “skin” is rich in plant phytochemicals and nutrients that help protect the grain from water, pests, sunlight and disease. These same active components, mainly polyphenols, have biological effects that both protect and enhance when used in formulas that are applied to the skin. Just as the bran protects the seed, the bran can help protect the skin.
