Tesco expands Scan as you Shop concept in-store

Published: 7-Sep-2016

Service allows consumers to scan their own shopping as they make their way around the store, saving time and keeping track of spend

Tesco, the UK supermarket chain, has expanded the number of stores now offering its Scan as you Shop service and launched a TV advert to promote awareness.

The grocery, household goods and personal care retailer announced it is rolling out the service to an additional 20 stores, bringing the total number offering Scan as you Shop to nearly 350.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to shop with us. Scan as You Shop is already used by over 600,000 customers every week, and not only saves time at the checkout, it enables customers to track their spend as they go too.

“This new trial will mean more customers than ever before can benefit from the service and check out in a matter of seconds.”

Scan as you Shop is currently only available to Tesco’s Clubcard members. The concept involves giving consumers the ability to scan products they want to buy as they go around the shop. They can then place them straight into their carrier bags rather than having to pack at the till.

In order to pay, shoppers are required to go to either a self-service checkout area or a manned checkout and scan a special barcode that is supplied at both stations. Doing this brings up the amount due to be paid and the consumer can go on to pay.
