Leading business magazine Fortune has compiled its 2008 list of America's Most Admired Companies, placing Procter & Gamble as the top company within the industry category of Soaps and Cosmetics.

The personal care giant came 8th overall, behind companies including Apple and Google, and was the only company in the cosmetics industry to make the prestigious top 20.

Within the Soaps and Cosmetics category, Estée Lauder and L'Oréal were ranked second and third respectively. However P&G underlined its domination by coming first in all eight key attributes of reputation that make up the industry rank. The attributes included innovation, social responsibility and quality of product as well as financial soundness and long-term investment.

Fortune attributed P&G's success to a combination of strategic focus, innovation, and internationalization.

To create the top 20, Fortune and its survey partners at Hay Group asked more than 3,700 experts from dozens of industries to select the 10 companies they admire most.
