Launched in April this year, Xirona Le Rogue is the latest addition to Merck’s series of inorganic colour travel pigments based on silica flakes. The pigment reveals vibrant red hues and red pearlescence without the rusty undertone of conventional iron pigments. Instead, a subtle colour travel effect is said to add a touch of mystery to cosmetic formulations.

Inorganic silica flakes, the substrate of this pigment, exhibit a uniform and controllable thickness as well as a smooth and regular surface. Merck says the result of these silica flake characteristics combined with a precisely controlled metal oxide coating process is an improved chromatic and colour purity. The ingredient is approved worldwide for use with suggested applications including products for the eye and lip areas.
