Iggesund Paperboard is now supplying a new version of its Invercote paperboard featuring a biodegradable plastic coating made from renewable sources. According to the Swedish company, the most commonly used barrier material in paperboard packaging is polyethylene, but Iggesund’s alternative is both biodegradable and meets the European standard EN 13432 for compostability.
“There is a clear demand for barrier materials that are biodegradable and can be composted,” commented Ola Buhrman, product manager of Iggesund’s plastic coated and laminated products.
The bio-plastic barrier is added at the company’s paperboard finishing department at Strömsbruk.
