Antimicrobial controls may increase for cosmetics ingredients suppliers
An unusual joint report by four EU health agencies could tighten controls on the use of antibiotics by cosmetic suppliers of animal-derived ingredients.
An unusual joint report by four EU health agencies could tighten controls on the use of antibiotics by cosmetic suppliers of animal-derived ingredients.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and the EU Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) are concerned about growing resistance amongst bacteria to such drugs.
The problem is source animals that are fed antibiotics whose residue could leach into the bodies of consumers applying such animal ingredient based cosmetics, says the report. It highlights “specific concern about bacterial resistance to antibiotics used in the treatment of Salmonella and Campylobacter infections”.
