AS Watson buys foothold in Ukraine

AS Watson (Hutchison Whampoa) has entered the Ukraine market with the acquisition of a 65% stake in the country's top health and beauty chain, DC. The acquisition, which is subject to anti-monopoly approval, will mark the continuation of Watson's march East. The company has recently established a presence in Russia, the Baltic States and Slovenia.

DC is the only nationwide beauty retail chain in the Ukraine and has the largest store presence. Founded in 1997, the retailer has quickly established a network of 99 stores, which are modelled on the convenience drugstore format.

“I am pleased to add the Ukraine, an emerging market for retail business, to AS Watson's current global network. DC presents strong potential for the Group's long term development in Central and Eastern Europe. We foresee a very healthy economic growth in Ukraine in the coming years and through this acquisition we expect to capture a considerable share of the annual growth of health and beauty retail in the country. We plan to double the numbers of DC stores in the near future,” commented Ian Wade, group managing director of AS Watson.
