Environmenal watchdog adds 22 chemicals to its ‘SIN’ list

The international Chemical Secretariat – a global environmental watchdog – has added 22 chemicals to its ‘SIN’ list of toxic substances. All are listed as endocrine disrupters identified as potentially harmful under EU chemical control system REACH. Of these, the personal care product industry could be particularly interested in preservative propylparaben plus UV filters 3-benzylidene camphor; 4-methylbenzylidene camphor; 4,4´-dihydroxybenzophenone; benzophenone-1; benzophenone-2; benzophenone-3; and ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate.

The secretariat (called ChemSec) has placed 378 substances on its SIN list. Its aim is to “put pressure on legislators to move forward with speed and urgency” in controlling these chemicals, said a ChemSec note.
