Counterfeit and pirated goods are forming an increasing percentage of global trade, according to the Trends in Trade in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods 2019 survey from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Union Office for Intellectual Property (EUIPO).
For 2016, the latest year for which figures are available, they constituted 3.3% ($509bn, compared to 2.5% in 2013).
The increase is all the more notable, say the organisations, because world trade in general has seen a slowdown.
