EU committee continues probe of hair dye safety

More hair dyes under legislative scrutiny

Further intense work on hair dye ingredient safety has been carried out by the EU’s scientific committee on consumer safety. It calls for further studies on the use of ‘o-aminophenol’, saying existing safety data is “insufficient and inadequate”, branding “studies on dermal absorption…not…suitable for safety assessment”. Indeed it went as far as saying “mutagenic potential cannot be excluded”.

Meanwhile it has been more positive about ‘Disperse Violet 1’ in semi-permanent hair dyes and ‘HC Yellow n°9’, setting a maximum concentration of 0.5% for both, but warning of the “sensitising potential” of HC Yellow n°9, adding it should not be used in combination with nitrosating substances.
