Jojoba supported as spermaceti alternative

The International Jojoba Export Council (IJEC) is set to sign an agreement with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) at in-cosmetics 2012 in Barcelona.

The coalition will support the common goal of a world free of whale hunting and the prevention of using spermaceti in cosmetic and personal care products. Jojoba offers a green and renewable alternative to whale-sourced spermaceti and is the only known botanical source of liquid wax esters.

Jojoba plants, which are based primarily on the same chemical structure as spermaceti, are cultivated in a few arid regions of the world and require little irrigation, are perennial and have long life spans.

Both organisations will also commit to working together to reduce import duties, which may exist or develop in the global trade of jojoba-based products. This is especially important because jojoba is cultivated in only a few countries and any barriers could deprive markets of the spermaceti alternative.
