Kao’s profits claim on weak sales
Net profits from the Japanese cosmetics group Kao rose 31% in the first quarter of 2008-09 (April-June 2008) to ¥17.1bn (€102m)over the previous quarter. The company noted that this growth was achieved despite higher raw materials costs and the stronger yen. Sales however remained in the doldrums rising 0.4% for the quarter year-on-year to ¥316.8bn.

Kao said it had experienced a lack of dynamism on the western and Japanese markets and was also affected by the rise in the yen rate against the US dollar from mid-2007.
