Lead found in US lipsticks

Tests on several branded lipsticks in the US have shown detectable levels of lead, according to the Boston-based Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. More than half of the 33 lipsticks tested were said to contain lead, with levels ranging from 0.03 to 0.65ppm.

The top brands testing positive for lead by the Bodycote Testing Group, California, were: L’Oréal Colour Riche ‘True Red’ (0.65ppm); L’Oréal Colour Riche ‘Classic Wine’ (0.58ppm); Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor ‘Maximum Red’ (0.56ppm); and Dior Addict ‘Positive Red’ (0.21ppm).

L'Oréal USA commented: "All the brands of the L'Oréal Group are in full compliance with [USA] Food and Drug Administration regulations".
