Neutrogena has launched a new generation of sunscreens after US regulators approved the use of a new UV filter for the first time in more than 25 years.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) added bemotrizinol (BEMT) to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients this summer.

It is the first new ingredient approved for use in over-the-counter sunscreens in the country since 1999.

Tickets are now available for the 25th anniversary of the Pure Beauty Awards, taking place on 15 October 2026 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, UK. Join the beauty industry for an evening of recognition and celebration as this year’s winners are revealed. Click here to secure your place.

The ingredient has been used in sunscreens in Europe and Asia for several years.

BEMT protects against both UVA and UVB rays and allows for more elegant formulations compared with other US-approved UV filters.

Neutrogena is among the first companies to bring a sunscreen with the newly approved ingredient to market in the US with two new formulations, marking a new era for sunscreens in the country.

Ultra Sheer Daily Face Sunscreen SPF 70 is an ultra-lightweight daily SPF that is said to feel 50% lighter than leading sunscreens, and Clear Face Sunscreen SPF 60 is formulated for acne-prone skin.

“BEMT allows for sunscreens to be more comfortable, wearable, and easier to incorporate into one’s daily routine,” Jipsha Thakrar, Neutrogena Sun Product Development Lead, told Cosmetics Business.
