A boost for green chemistry in Asia Pacific

Cognis has opened a new state-of–the-art production facility for alkyl polyglucoside (APG) surfactants in China at its Jinshan site which the company says will enable it to better serve the increasing demand for green solutions in the Asia Pacific region.

APG surfactants are produced from renewable plant-derived materials such as vegetable oils and starch. Asia Pacific is regarded as a market with significant growth potential and Cognis says this fits with its focus on high growth, high demand areas driven by wellness and sustainability trends.

“The new facility in China complements our existing plants in Germany and the US and improves global availability of our high quality APG surfactants and is a real investment in the company’s future,” commended Richard Ridinger, executive vp Care Chemicals.

Cognis also used the occasion of the opening to sign the Responsible Care Charter with the aim of improving safety, health and environmental performance. “The Cognis Responsible Care team in Greater China will soon start coordinating self-assessment processes within the affiliate and integrating the principles of responsible care into its standards and procedures,” added Ridinger.

Responsible Care is an initiative of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) which encourages companies from the same country to work together to continuously improve their safety, health and environmental performance. It also aims to encourage chemical companies to communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes
