This is the first major takeover for the owner of Clarins and demonstrates its interest in the ‘clean’ movement

Famille C, the owner of French cosmetics group Clarins, has finalised its acquisition of American beauty brand Ilia.

The takeover is the French business’ first move into the growing ‘clean’ category, which was announced in February.

The sum has not been disclosed.

Clarins, meanwhile, will own a minority stake in Ilia.

Ilia’s ethos is built on fusing science and ‘clean’ together.

Founder Sasha Plavsic was one of the first players to develop colour cosmetics with skin-benefiting ingredients.

Ilia’s hero product is its Super Serum Skin Tint, which has sold more than one million units since its launch in 2019.

Under the new ownership, Plavsic is expected to lead the business, alongside CEO Lynda Berkowitz, according to Fashion Network.

Both women have minority stakes in the cosmetics company.
