What are and why IBR-Phyto(flu)ene®?
IBR-Phyto(flu)ene® (phytoene and phytofluene) - the colourless carotenoids, absorb light in the UV range and act as excellent hydroxyl radicals quenchers. As such they were shown to reduce TiO2 free radical generation damage and stabilise avobenzone when exposed to sunlight and free radical attack.
Free radical generation by the widespread sunscreens TiO2 and ZnO when exposed to UV (e.g. sun) is well known and leads to increased instability of other components in formula as well as increased risk of oxidative damage to the skin from the free radicals generation.
Avobenzone, a broad spectrum sunscreen with absorbance in the UVA range is heavily degraded by sunlight and free radicals.
Phytoene and phytofluene, the colourless carotenoids, are colourless in the visible range, and absorb light in the UV range only. These molecules have effective and beneficial activities, enhancing skin anti inflammatory and beneficial activities, enhancing skin anti inflammatory capacity, protecting against UV and oxidative damage that can lead to premature ageing along with protection of DNA from UV and free radical damage and collagen from degradation.
A recent patent application filed by IBR demonstrates the ability of the phytoene and phytofluene to reduce TiO2 free radical generation damage and stabilise avobenzone when exposed to sunlight and free radical attack.
