Overcoming challenges: Lessons from a fragrance ingredient supplier

Published: 9-May-2018

Conditions have been challenging over the last few years for ingredient suppliers.

Heightened transportation costs, production factory closures, and most recently higher steel prices have begun to work their way onto balance sheets. Added to this, ingredient suppliers to the fragrance industry have had to deal with a series of crisis all on their own.

From regulatory pressure to destructive weather in growing regions, Berjé have devoted a great deal of effort to overcoming challenges in a changing market, especially on the supply side, to help support customers.

Some long term trends that have begun to affect a number of products are pressure on farmers and producers to conserve water, follow environmental restrictions, and produce more food crops to feed a growing population.

To help manage and bring stability to customers, Berjé have been promoting alternative supply origins.

One such product is Basil Oil Vietnamese, an interesting alternative source. By supporting this variety Berjé have been able to ease the strain of demand on the traditional Indian crop and introduce the industry to an exceptionally clean and fragrant variety of Basil Oil.

The same can be said for Sandalwood Oil, which is a classic Indian ingredient. Over the years Berjé have been able to cultivate supply in Australia and provide an excellent quality of Sandalwood that does not cause undue environmental stress.

More opportunities are developing now, especially for a Black Cardamom from Nepal and increased sourcing from African nations.

Berjé sees cycles like these popping up with the citruses, grasses, and spice markets as well so more shifts are expected. While seeking out and supporting alternate sources can be challenging, having a diverse supply has led to more stability in times of turmoil.
