Sulfate-free ingredients for mild, gentle cleansers

Published: 13-Oct-2017

Stepan Company is committed to supporting personal care brands that have the mildness and gentleness of their products as a top priority.

As a global surfactant supplier, that means offering ingredients that support the missions of our customers, starting with gentle, sulfate-free cleansers and mild secondary surfactants.

What is 'Sulfate-Free?'

“Sulfate-free” is a term that usually refers to anionic detergents that are not sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).

Sulfate-free surfactants are generally milder to the hair and skin than SLS or SLES, which means that fresh hair color can last longer and skin may feel softer. Each sulfate-free chemistry can offer unique benefits.

Why Use Amphoteric Surfactants?

Amphoteric surfactants are known for being mild to the skin and hair.

A special class of amphoterics ― amphoacetates and amphopropionates ― are exceptionally mild, making them great for applications where mildness matters: baby products, gentle cleansers for sensitive skin, or soothing and calming formulations.

Stepan’s Specialty Amphoteric surfactants are biodegradable, naturally-derived from plant sources and impart conditioning and softening effects to hair and skin.
