A study conducted at Ashland compares the efficacy of its progressive Optiphen MIT Ultra and Optiphen MIT Plus preservatives with parabens and halogenated antimicrobials for use in broad spectrum sunscreens. Nadia Konaté and Andrea Wingenfeld report

Developments in preservative formulations are continually made to meet the requirements of a very dynamic and demanding personal care market and adjustments made to respond to product specificities, new trends and regulations. Classic preservatives now share the market with newly developed antimicrobials, which bring additional qualities such as stability or broad approval to the preservative portfolio. Such developments benefit the personal care formulator, especially when dealing with difficult to preserve products.
