MAC Cosmetics has appointed Nicola Formichetti as its new Global Creative Director.
The announcement, made Tuesday by parent company The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC), signals a strategic move to reinvigorate the brand’s creative direction through a culturally and digitally progressive lens.
Formichetti, a designer and creative director known for his work with fashion houses including Mugler and Diesel, as well as longstanding collaborations with global popstar Lady Gaga, will oversee all aspects of MAC’s global creative strategy.
He will report to Aïda Moudachirou-Rébois, Senior VP and Global General Manager of MAC.
In his new role, Formichetti will be responsible for shaping the brand’s visual identity across campaigns, packaging, product design, digital content and retail experiences.
His appointment comes as the brand looks to deepen its connection with younger, more diverse consumers and reassert its position at the intersection of beauty, culture and technology.
“MAC is an iconic brand that has always championed the people and communities that move culture forward,” said Formichetti in a statement.
“Having previously collaborated with the brand on my Nicopanda collection and the MAC VIVA GLAM campaign, I am thrilled to return and bring my vision to this next chapter.”
Originally born in Japan to Italian and Japanese parents, Formichetti has developed a reputation for integrating global perspectives into his creative output.
His work frequently blends fashion, music and technology in ways that aim to challenge conventional aesthetics and speak to digitally native audiences.
Formichetti’s appointment is the latest in a series of strategic changes at ELC, which recently launched its “Beauty Reimagined” initiative aimed at making the group the most consumer-centric prestige beauty company globally.
“Nicola’s appointment is a bold step forward for MAC and for The Estée Lauder Companies,” said Jane Hertzmark Hudis, Executive VP and Chief Brand Officer at ELC.
“He brings the vision, bold creativity and track record to take the MAC brand to new heights.”
Aïda Moudachirou-Rébois added: “Nicola is a once-in-a-generation creative talent who perfectly embodies the bold, fearless energy of MAC and our global community.
His appointment is not only a celebration of artistry, but a reflection of our commitment to creativity, authenticity and cultural relevance.”
Formichetti will lead a multidisciplinary team as he works to modernise and amplify MAC’s presence across global markets.
The brand, which has long held a reputation for inclusivity and artistic expression, is looking to evolve its message in line with the expectations of a younger, more digitally engaged audience.
