Shiseido has confirmed a slight downturn in first half 2008-2009 sales with a weak domestic market being offset by growth in foreign markets.

April-September 2008 sales fell 1% to ¥359.3bn though operating profits went up 5.6% to ¥33.8bn and net profits increased by 55.3% to just over ¥20bn.
The group has also confirmed its net profits forecast for the full year of about ¥36bn, reflecting an expected rise of 1.5% in the year.
Japanese sales in the reporting period fell 4% owing to sluggish market conditions and intense competition. Foreign sales improved by around 4.6%, helped especially by the relatively strong Chinese market.
In other news Shiseido has announced plans to revamp its cosmetics brands to consolidate 10 existing lines bringing them all under the one name, simply entitled Shiseido.
This will include Shiseido The Skincare and Shiseido Men will be absorbed under the new name, which is meant to improve product recognition. The new brand will be sold in 68 countries as well as in Japan from January onwards.
