What makes sterols so effective for skin barrier repair?

The stratum corneum contains a variety of lipids as part of the intercellular lipids that hold keratinocytes together.

These oily substances help to provide a moisture protective barrier function and prevent excessive trans-epidermal water loss, while regulating desquamation.
