UK’s aerosol filling figures remain level in 2009

BAMA’s unit filling statistics down 0.6% compared to 2008

The UK’s aerosol sector produced 1233.2 million units in 2009, according to the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA), a slight decline of 0.06% compared to 2008’s figure of 1240.6 million units.

Within the personal care category, described by BAMA as a traditionally strong area for the UK’s aerosol industry, deodorants, body sprays and anti-perspirants grew slightly (0.7%) while the category headed other personal care items jumped 41.4%. Unit filling figures for all other personal care product sectors declined, however. The suntan/bronzing sector was the most diminished, dropping 45.5%.

BAMA director Sue Rogers called the relatively stable figures a “notable achievement for the UK aerosol industry” and said that they compared “very favourably with many other manufacturing sectors”. Decreases in some categories were attributed to structural changes within organisations, cheap own label imports, destocking and down-branding.

In Rogers’ opinion, promoting the sustainability of aerosols has helped the packaging medium remain popular with retailers and consumers. We believe that our enormous stride to promote the recycling of aerosols has paid off as public bodies, retailers, manufacturers and consumers and other end users are getting the message that aerosols are a sustainable and efficient packaging and dispensing option.“
