Personal care giant realigns businesses to create cosmetics centre of excellence

Unilever is to close four sites in the UK and cut some 800 jobs but will invest around £40m at its major Port Sunlight site on Merseyside to create a centre of excellence focused on cosmetics. No details on the cosmetics project have been released but it is expected the investment will create about 150 jobs.

The hair care products plant at Swansea and a distribution site at Bridgend in South Wales will close. The former Sara Lee plant in Slough, which manufactures Radox and a range of bath and shower products will also close. Unilever is also to shut down its IT site at Ewloe, in north-east Wales, and it is expected most of these IT jobs will transfer to Port Sunlight and Bangalore.

The review of the site closure programme will be concluded by the end of this year with changes introduced by late 2013.
